June 2, 2022 – At its meeting on June 1, 2022, the board of directors of the Fonds de recherche du Québec — Nature et technologies (FRQNT) approved $71.6M in awards and grants (new awards and commitments) for 2022-2023.

In terms of new funding announced June 2, the FRQNT is handing out 227 new master’s awards, 301 new doctoral awards and 51 new postdoctoral awards this year. These 579 new awards represent a total of $12.5M for 2022-2023.

Taking into consideration its previous commitments, the FRQNT will dedicate a total of $22M to research training through scholarship, fellowship and internship programs.

When it comes to support programs for new academics and college researchers, 52 research proposals are slated for funding. These are part of an investment of more than $4.5M by the FRQNT to support careers in research (new awards and commitments).

With regard to research projects and groups, the FRQNT will invest a total of $45.1M this year, including $22.6M to fund 35 strategic clusters, AGORA platforms, innovation networks, and innovation catalysts (college-university cluster) and $22.5M for research projects (ex.: Teams) and international initiatives.

In addition, the FRQNT will contribute $4.7M to initiatives to tackle major societal challenges: sustainable development and the impacts of climate change and digital technologies; demographic change and ageing; entrepreneurship and creativity; and a fourth new science and society component. These amounts include not only new funding offers, but also applications the FRQNT had already committed to funding.

Quote
“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the new cohort of FRQNT award and grant recipients. The challenges we are currently facing are considerable, be they climate change, the loss of biodiversity, or breakdowns in the supply chain, to name just a few. However, I am convinced that that our students, researchers and research groups in the natural sciences and engineering, with all their strengths and diversity, will actively contribute to finding innovative, sustainable solutions. The FRQ community gives me confidence in the future!”
